So, with the Catalyst pedals, zero clearance issues. I'm beginning to think that maybe it was my foot positioning last year that made my right heel clip the seat stay. When getting set up in the gate (right foot forward), I would meticulously place the ball of my right foot right on top of the pedal spindle, then just step up and and put my left foot on the pedal wherever it landed, and adjust it based on feel. I have a sneaking suspicion that my left foot wasn't totally on the ball and was placed a little more midfoot. My right foot was kinda squirmy and I slipped pedals a lot. So, my right foot could have just been twisting into the frame, if that makes sense. I ended the season last year on these Catalyst pedals (different frame) and loved them. I wish I had found them when I was riding the Redline the first time. I don't think I would have sold it. #itallstartswitharedline :)

Alright, I put one 3mm spacer between the bottom bracket and the frame, and that gave me 3/8" on one side and 1/2" on the other. I was like, "yeah, I can live with that." Then, I noticed that the spindle was recessed into the opposite side crank arm 3mm more. Hmmm, forgot that would happen. I'm worried there won't be enough spindle being clamped down on by the crank arm, so I returned everything back to factory spec. I'm like, "yeah, let's just trust that Redline knows what they are doing." Hopefully, with those Catalyst pedals I will have more heel clearance. I will post an update after the first ride.

Actually, I just started building the bike last night and I noticed that the right crank arm is a lot closer to the frame than the left crank arm (1/2" gap on left side, and 1/4" gap on right side). I vaguely remember that from last season, but I didn't have a lot of experience building bikes at that time so I thought it was normal. Now I'm like "where the heck are the bottom bracket spacers?" So, I bought some spacers and will shim up the BB today. I am almost positive that will solve the problem. But to answer your question, it was only my right heel that was hitting. At least the black scuff mark was only on the right side, so it was definitely hitting the most.

Bought this bike last spring, made changes here and there, ended up selling it because I wanted to try 175mm cranks. Did not want to put 175s on this frame because my heels were already lightly clipping my seat stays when I pedaled (I had little black scuff marks on the seat stays from my shoes). However, the day I sold it, I knew I had made a mistake. It is such a cool looking bike. And yeah, it reminds me of the old Stu Thomsen too, which was my very first BMX growing up in the 80s. By the end of last season I had gone through two more frames, neither of which I loved. And honestly, probably because they were uninspiring. I agree, if it doesn't look cool to you, then you won't be stoked to ride it. So, last week I just bought this exact same bike again, and I am going to set it up exactly the way I had it before I sold it. The kicker is that it turns out I hated the 175s anyway. I'm gonna ride this frame til it snaps...or until Redline releases a Pro XL in another colorway. FYI, I am 6' tall and this bike fits me perfectly...with a couple mods. I've been riding 21" frames for years (freestyle), but when I started racing I began obsessing over my crappy gate technique and I assumed it was because my bike was smaller than the pros (damn you YouTube for getting into my head). My gates were actually worse on the larger frames, harder to snap. I use a Tangent 60mm top load stem, and I bump my bars forward like 1/2" and I am good to go. The only complaint I have for this bike out of the box is that the gearing is way too high for 170mm cranks. 44/16 with 1.75 Speed Boosters gives you a 54.72 rollout. That would be fine on 175s but on 170s it's a pain in the butt to spin. Definitely go with smaller tires, or a smaller chainring. Last year I had good luck with 43/16 on Speed Booster Elites. This year I am sticking with the regular Speed Boosters and the 43/16. With 1.75 in the rear that gives you a 53.48 rollout, and if you need to bump it up a little, a 1.85 in the rear gives you a 53.75 rollout. I plan to run 1.85s front and rear because these rims are on the narrow side. The 1.75 Speed Booster Elites were just too damn skinny on these rims.

Regarding my heels clipping the seat stays, I am using Pedaling Innovations Catalyst pedals which move your foot a little further forward on the pedal. I LOVE these pedals on other bikes, so I am hoping that they will give me the clearance I need on this frame. But yeah, the heel clipping wasn't a deal breaker, just the main reason I couldn't put longer cranks on.
