Today’s bike of the day is Nico’s Jayhawk Racing 26″ dirt jumper. Jayhawk Racing is known for making the most unique looking high end BMX racing bikes. The patent pending “Box Beam” design can create a “rugged frame structure which can be made from any sheet material, including Titanium, Aluminum, or even pre-preg carbon fiber sheet. The chosen version is made from a single sheet of aluminum alloy, to which the bottom bracket, head tube and dropouts are attached.” They also ventured into making 26″ MTB frames. This is our first time seeing a 26″ Jayhawk and we’re really digging it.
Here’s what Nico had to say:
“The social ride BMX scene here in Houston is healthy for sure. You can find good rides full of real nice people here any day of the week. I wanted to build a bike that celebrated the Space City. It just so happens that the frame builder, Jim Moore, is as ex NASA guy so the theme was obvious.
“I’m a sucker for the way a light bike feels in the air. My go-to ride for a while has been a Redline Flight Carbon Pro XL. However, looking for a dirt jumper I realized all the new bikes I could afford were on the heavier side. I heard a rumor that Jayhawk Racing was building a few 26″ BMX race frames, so I contacted them and picked one up. The whole build cost just under the price of a new GT LaBomba, weighing in at just over 24lbs. Granted, this is NOT a pure DJ bike by any means. It’s a weird mix of BMX, XC and DJ, but it’s solid and just right for these Houston Streets for sure.”
